Moving in sort of done

After much soul searching, DH and I ditched the house (overseas landlords) for a locally owned, operated, and maintained apartment. Costing a bit more month to month, but a good deal was to be had with two free months rent, a grocery gift card of several hundred dollars, and use of a moving van. All in all, comes out to what we were paying before, but with 300+ square feet. Whee! 🙂

We got the keys yesterday morning, after DH tried to haggle on the lease agreement (somehow he think you can do this and get somewhere. Maybe it does work and I am too subservient to The Man.). We spent the entire afternoon packing up the truck, twice, and moving it over to the new place. Old place has to get cleaned today and keys turned in. Here’s the fun part: our little guy is supposed to come home today and is sicko… *sigh* This should prove to be an interesting day.

The new place is large. No obvious defects beyond the glut of cardboard and plastic bags in every room. We had really hoped to be unpacked before DS came home. Alas, it shall not be so… I hope he doesn’t freak out too much. I need to find his toys ASAP.

Wish us Godspeed, so to speak, on cleaning the apartment with rugrat in tow… he might have fun running room to room… but from what Mom has told me, he’s not running anywhere right now… just wanting to be held and snuggled ‘cuz he feels yucky.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I enjoy Thanksgiving so much because it is a time that usually I spend with family that I don’t get to see on a regular basis. This year, because of the timing of our lease, we are at home surrounded by the boxes we love (to hate) (for the sake of Allah subhana wa ta’ala of course *wink). My Thanksgiving dinner was last weekend at my parents’ house when I was there to drop off our son for the week. An aunt was there who I haven’t seen in years and a friend of the family whom I see every Thanksgiving. I am very thankful everyday that my family is still here on this earth. I don’t know about their akhirah and it frightens me, but here I can love them and be kind to them and fight with them all the things families do that somehow add up to being loving…

Insha’allah, this Thanksgiving finds with family or friends or both, in good health, good faith, and enough to eat to make until tomorrow. I am thinking of you this year as DH and I pack without a place to move (Allah will provide. Soon. Ameen!) and there is chaos around us. All my love to each of you. I hope you are blessed every day.

Yours truly, Umm Hamza

Footloose and Babyfree, sort of…

Our son is with his grandparents for nine glorious days! I miss him, but he’s having a blast. My mother is wearing him out. Meanwhile, I slept the entire night last night and only woke up once. Sleep, sweet sleep! And DH actually has been able to sleep in our bed too since little guy is gone.

We are packing up a storm and cleaning out trash… I am getting rid of anything I haven’t used in a year (not clothing) and trying to really streamline our stuff. Hard to do. Having some problems with lease and property owners… hopefully will get worked out today or we will be finding another apartment.

The lease is asking for first and last month’s rent AND a deposit. Is this normal? I know it was back in DC and in other larger cities, but golly gosh gee folks… forking over $2000 dollars in one weekend sort of blows chunks. And they want us to wire it… to DUBAI. Did you know how much it costs to wire money????? Try over $100 for that amount. I know the owner is giving a really great deal on the rent… otherwise we would not be able to afford this place, but its really at the top end of our means and extra expenses like wire fees cut into things for our son, for the house we are saving for.

ARGH. The owner strung us along for 2 months and being the generous person I try to be, I trusted it but now its getting out of hand because repairs have not been fully completed, and they have neglected to pay the property managers (friends of ours and theirs) for the work that has already been completed on the house… Needless to say, I am uber-frustrated right now. *sigh*

Moving next week, insha’allah…

While many folks enjoy turkey and holiday fun next week, hubster and I will be moving into our new digs. No big changes of scenery like a state hop or anything like that. More of a neighborhood swap. We are moving into a house for the first time. Not owning, just renting for a really good rate, but still its a step up. Its huge in comparison with our apartment and has a huge yard… Insha’allah we can get everything done with the paperwork this week. The owners, friends of a friend, live in the ME and they have been plagued with communications problems recently. I am getting a bit stressed.

One nice thing is that DS is going to his grandmother’s for the WEEK. (yes, I said WEEK.) A week of spoiling, good food, lots of car trips to the grocery store (my parents love to bargain shop! And they’re good at it too!), lots of fun people to play with… and we, mom and dad, get to move our house with out stepping on him.

I really hope the move does freak the kiddo out. He’s been over to house a couple of times, but we will be completely out of our apartment when he comes back in a week. Hopefully, having his toys and cats will make the new place seem like home.

I am so excited… a real home to live in, a nice neighborhood, weekly trash pick up… so domestic!

My nafs, my nafs…

For me, it is so hard to fast outside of Ramadan. I like the community of the fasting, knowing that it is mandatory. The make up is hell (literally and figuratively). But I so liked the physical changes that I get from fasting… I lost ten pounds. (alhamdulillah… that is a sign that I wasn’t being a total pig in the evenings) I lost that plump look around my face that haunts me because of my carbonated love. The rest of my Islam does better during Ramadan too… I am especially careful to pray on time, make up what I miss (no comments from the peanut gallery), and be a nicer person.

But now that Ramadan is over, I am having a hard time finding a spiritual center. I am a person who needs inner motivation to do things, to have a feeling behind them. Punishment is a poor deterrant for me if it leaves me feeling just as cold as before. I really need something to latch on to to keep my Islam going through the year and I don’t know what it is.

Work at Home jobs

A friend and I who work together and are newer mothers (15 m.o. is mine, 3 1/2 m.o. boy for her) are desparately in need of different work… something that allows us to stay at home with our boys more but allows us to at least make half of our current income. (We’re not breaking the bank presently by any means!) We have been tossing around ideas, but we are not sure what is successful, what isn’t, how to find time to work while at home with an exploratory munchkin (me) or a nursing all the time munchkin (her).

Any ideas are welcome… Does anyone on here do Avon or MaryKay? Are those profitable and how do you make them profitable? I would love to sell modest clothing online, but I can not find time to be online while at home with the explorer unless he’s sleeping and I would rather join him. We have thought about making homemade beauty products (lip balms and soap), personalized items (tons of strange named kids out there nowadays), and the list goes on. Please give me some feedback!
